Marcelo Ferreira Gustafsson

“Craft is a formula, a debate between how and why.
A negotiation in material, form and tradition. A performative dialogue between inner and outer dimensions. Ferreira’s body of work explores jewelry and sculpture with an autoethnographic practice.“

Name of work

Cephalaspidea

Thoughts about the artwork:

Jewelry can be understood as a connection, external part in negotiation with the body in this series of ornaments I wanted to look at that phenomenon further and started from the other direction. Looking at rings as an entity of its own clinching and taking the hand under siege forcing It to adapt into new movements and restrictions. Sensoric to their context and environment. Objects that seek to be explored.

Describe the process; who, what, why, where, when, how and with what help:

My materials are extensions of myself. Ingredients of experiences.

My process is about transactions in the end by starting from an abstract piece of wood and root

carving, reducing and defining how this piece could be attached to a body. What cracks to leave and how much of the crafting process should be visible

This serie of ornaments are about intimacy main materials being birch wood and a root (Colophospermum Mopane)
animal furs and hairs, some gemstones hidden away from an external gaze and faced inwards towards the wearer. Partly lacquered, partly raw. Amorphic and fixed to their nature.
